St. Louis Cardinals Legend Ozzie Smith Throws Out First Pitch
St. Louis, MO – In a ceremony filled with nostalgia and excitement, St. Louis Cardinals legend Ozzie Smith threw out the first pitch before yesterday’s game against the Chicago Cubs.
The 68-year-old Smith, widely regarded as one of the greatest shortstops in baseball history, was greeted with a standing ovation as he made his way to the mound. The crowd erupted in cheers as he wound up and threw a perfect strike to Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina.
“It’s always an honor to come back to Busch Stadium and be a part of the Cardinals’ tradition,” Smith said in a pre-game interview. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to throw out the first pitch and get the crowd excited for the game.”
Smith’s appearance was part of the Cardinals’ ongoing celebration of their 125th anniversary season. The team has been hosting various events and promotions throughout the year to commemorate the milestone.
As a key member of the Cardinals’ World Series championship teams in 1982 and 1987, Smith is beloved by Cardinals fans for his incredible defensive skills, clutch hitting, and charismatic personality.
During his 19-year MLB career, Smith earned 13 Gold Glove Awards, was named to 12 National League All-Star teams, and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002.
Smith’s influence on the game extends beyond his on-field accomplishments. He has been an active ambassador for baseball, working to promote the sport and encourage young players to develop their skills.
“Ozzie Smith is a true legend of the game, and we’re thrilled to have him back at Busch Stadium,” said Cardinals President Bill DeWitt III. “His contributions to the Cardinals’ success and his enduring popularity with our fans make him a beloved figure in St. Louis.”
The Cardinals went on to win yesterday’s game 5-3, thanks in part to a strong outing from starting pitcher Jack Flaherty. The team remains in contention for a National League playoff spot with just a few weeks left in the regular season.
As for Smith, he was happy to have played a small part in the day’s festivities. “It’s always special to be back in St. Louis and be a part of the Cardinals’ community,” he said. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to give back to the fans and the organization that gave me so much during my playing career.”
