The Cincinnati Reds’ struggles continued yesterday as they fell to their division rivals, the St. Louis Cardinals, in a heartbreaking 5-4 loss. The Reds, who have been working to rebuild their team after a disappointing season last year, were hoping to turn things around with a win against the Cardinals.
Despite a strong start from pitcher Tyler Mahle, the Reds’ bullpen faltered in the late innings, allowing the Cardinals to take the lead and secure the win. The loss marks the Reds’ fifth in a row and drops them to last place in the National League Central division.
“It’s tough to swallow,” said Reds manager David Bell. “We had this game in our grasp and let it slip away. We need to find a way to close out games and start winning some of these close ones.”
The Reds’ offense, which has been a bright spot this season, was held to just four runs on eight hits. Star player Joey Votto was noticeably absent from the lineup, nursing a sore back.
“We miss Joey, no question,” said Bell. “He’s a leader on this team and a key part of our offense. We need him back and healthy as soon as possible.”
The Reds will look to bounce back today in the final game of the series against the Cardinals. With a win, they can avoid a sweep and start to turn things around. But for now, the team is left to ponder what could have been.
“We can’t keep letting these games slip away,” said Reds pitcher Amir Garrett. “We need to find a way to win, and fast.”
