The Atlanta Braves have announced two significant additions to their major league coaching staff. Earlier today, the organization revealed that Hugh Quattlebaum has been hired, and Carlos Mendez has been promoted from their minor league system.
Mendez, who has been with the Braves’ minor league teams for 17 seasons, began his coaching career with the organization in 2008. Before transitioning to coaching, Mendez had a professional playing career that started in 1992, including a brief stint in the majors with the Baltimore Orioles in 2003, where he appeared in 26 games. He played for Richmond, the Braves’ Triple-A affiliate, from 2005 to 2007. Throughout his coaching career, Mendez has served in various roles across all levels of the Braves’ minor league system.
Quattlebaum joins the Braves after spending the last two seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks as their assistant director of hitting. His previous experience includes roles with the New York Mets and Seattle Mariners organizations. In 2021, he served as the interim major league hitting coach for the Mets.
Both Mendez and Quattlebaum will serve as assistant hitting coaches for the Braves, supporting Tim Dyers, who has taken on the role of hitting coach. These new additions bring a wealth of experience to the Braves’ coaching staff, with Mendez offering a deep connection to the organization and Quattlebaum bringing expertise from several major league teams. Their contributions are expected to bolster the Braves’ hitting development as they continue to build on their success.
